RV AC not cooling? Checks to try before you call a tech

Alabama heat and humidity push rooftop RV air conditioners to their limit. A few safe checks can solve the problem or help the tech diagnose it faster.

Safe checks you can do

  1. Thermostat: confirm it's set to cool, the set point is below room temperature, and the fan isn't on "fan only".
  2. Power: check the breaker in the RV panel and the pedestal breaker at the campsite. On 30-amp service, running the AC with a microwave, water heater or hair dryer can trip it.
  3. Filters: clean the return-air filters in the ceiling unit. Clogged filters are a common cause of weak cooling.
  4. Ice on the coil: if airflow is weak and you see frost, switch to fan only until it thaws, then try again with clean filters.
  5. Heat load: close blinds on the sunny side, and park in shade when you can. Rooftop units are often rated to cool the air passing through by around 15 to 20 degrees, not to make a hot RV cold in a few minutes.

When to stop and call a tech

What to tell the tech

Give the AC brand and model (on a label under the ceiling shroud or on the rooftop unit), your shore power (30 or 50 amp), what it does when you turn it on, and whether you've had the problem before.
