Hurricane prep for RV owners on the Alabama Gulf Coast
RVs are not safe shelter in a hurricane. The best plan is to leave early, with the RV ready to roll. Always follow local emergency officials.
Before the season
- Have the roof seals, tires, brakes and batteries checked so the RV can travel on short notice.
- Decide where you'll go and how you'll get there. Campgrounds inland fill up fast when a storm is coming.
- Photograph the RV inside and out and keep your insurance papers somewhere you can reach.
When a storm is coming
- Watch the forecasts and evacuation orders from Mobile and Baldwin County emergency management.
- Leave early. High winds make towing or driving a tall RV dangerous well before landfall.
- Many coastal campgrounds close and ask guests to leave during hurricane warnings.
- If you must leave the RV behind, retract slides and awnings, turn off propane, unplug from power and move it away from trees and low ground if you can.
After the storm
- Don't plug into power until you've checked for water inside and damaged wiring.
- Look for roof damage, torn seals and wet spots. Water damage spreads if it isn't dried quickly.
- Have the propane system leak-tested before using appliances.
- Document damage with photos before repairs for your insurance claim. A mobile tech can inspect the RV where it sits.
